6 Valentine's Day Ideas for the Broke College Student
Published February 7th, 2019

Strapped for cash? Save your Ramen and Ravioli money. Whether you’re spending Valentine’s Day with friends or a significant other, there’s a bunch of things college students can do on a tight budget!

1. Push Play

This one should come as no surprise. Netflix can be a Valentine’s day savior! Go grocery shopping the night before and prove that you’re capable of cooking more than just Ramen and heating up microwavable foods. Have a list of movies or tv shows in mind and let your partner choose. Their selection will also tell you a lot about what type of person they might be!

2. Mother Nature

Bundle up and get out of the house. Share a breath of fresh air! Walk around the scenic areas of campus, go to a park or find a good hiking trail in your area. Create a no phone rule. Bring them with you for safety reasons of course but don’t pull them out of your pockets. Enjoy your time with each other and focus on living in the moment.

3. Game Night

For a chill Valentine’s Day, you can celebrate by working on a puzzle or something similar. Adult coloring books are a blast! You’ll spend hours working together and it will leave you feeling accomplished when it’s finished. Do you both have a completive side? Pull out an old board game and may the best player win!

4. Dose of Laughter

Comedy shows are a perfect affordable date idea for couples who want to go out on Valentine’s Day but don’t want to spend a lot. If you’re going through a tough time with your partner laughter is always the best medicine!

5. Give Back

This idea is not mentioned enough on Valentine’s day. People are very fortunate to have a significant other to spend the day with that we often get caught up in all of the commercialization. Depending on your status with who you’re spending the day with, volunteering somewhere can you bring two people closer than you could ever possibly imagine. Plus there’s a lot of people in the world who would give anything to spend a day in your shoes on Valentine’s Day. Check out your local soup kitchen, homeless shelter or hospital.

6. Campus Events

Check out your school events! Free is always a great price. There is more than likely an arts and crafts event or a showing of some romantic comedy movie somewhere on campus. There’s no reason not to take advantage of it!

Super Savings Tip: Make sure to stock up on candy after February 14th. Stores usually have steep markdowns on Valentines Day candy, so you can get all of the sugar chocolate you need to make it through finals!
